Brian A. Castle
Owner/Principal – B.A. Castle Design

A hard-working professional with 20+ years experience in the design industry, Brian combines a multi-discipline approach with a practical business sensitivity. Adhering to the design philosophy form follows function, he creates bold, effective solutions through use of the fundamental design components — form and space, grid, typography, color, image, and tactile materials.

Brian earned a BFA (Graphic Design) from Western Michigan University in 1989 while working as a graphic designer for Kalamazoo-based James River Corporation. After moving back to his hometown Detroit in 1990 and working multiple entry-level graphic design jobs, Brian packed his bags and continued his education at the school of life while kicking around up-and-down the east coast and Europe.

Back in Detroit by 1992, Brian got his first career break in the design industry working as a graphic designer at Herman Design Group. There he worked on annual reports and investor relations, corporate communications, corporate identity programs, and packaging for a range of clients including Comerica, The Detroit Medical Center, Manufacturers Bank, and Walbridge, among others.

In 1996, Brian went to work at internationally-recognized design firm Ford & Earl Associates in Troy, Michigan integrating his graphic design skills into a multi-discipline environment while working on projects with interior architects and designers, environmental and interactive designers, and fabrication services. Clients included Beaumont, Delphi Automotive, GM, GMAC Financial Services, Holcim, St. John Health System to name a few.

In the late ’90s, Brian was invited to teach as adjunct faculty in the graphic design department at the College for Creative Studies, a position which he is involved with through today. In recent years, his focus has been teaching Typography 1 & 2 to first-year students, and environmental design to third- and fourth-year students, introducing the basic principles of wayfinding and signage programs.

In 2003 Brian cofounded CastleNason Design and subsequently B.A. Castle Design in 2010 as a creative partner of the award-winning design/marketing consortium Group [eX]. As a principal and partner in Group [eX], he often leads, and/or collaborates with, a creative team responsible for strategy and design on print, identity, display and exhibit, wayfinding and signage, and interactive projects. Brian’s design, as well as the work of Group [eX], has been recognized by industry competitions and creative organizations. A representative list of clients worked with during this time would be Balthazar Korab, Carhartt, College for Creative Studies, Guardian Industries, Larson Realty Group, Lubrizol, PPG, and St. Joe Mercy Health System.
