b. a. castle design
B. A. Castle Design was founded in 2010 by Brian A. Castle transitioning out of his previous firm CastleNason Design. As a design professional with 25+ years of experience, Brian combines hard work, creativity, and a practical business sensitivity to create value for clients and organizations through consistently successful design and marketing solutions.
Brian earned a BFA (Graphic Design) degree from Western Michigan University in 1989 while working in the design center at James River Corporation (Kalamazoo, MI). Upon graduation he moved back to his hometown of Detroit where over the next two years he had the opportunity to work multiple entry-level graphic design jobs. Deciding to expand his knowledge of design environments geographically, in 1991 Brian packed his bags and traveled to Europe and up-and-down the east coast of the United States.
After returning to Detroit, in 1992 Brian got his first career break working as a graphic designer at Herman Design Group (Detroit, MI). With Rick Herman as a mentor, Brian developed and refined his design and typographic skills working on projects—annual reports and corporate communications, corporate identity programs, and packaging—for a range of clients including: Comerica; The Detroit Medical Center; Manufacturers Bank; Walbridge; etc.
In 1996 Brian joined nationally-recognized design firm Ford & Earl Associates (Troy, MI) as an Associate, integrating his skills into a multi-discipline design environment while working on projects with architectural, interior, environmental and interactive designers as well as fabrication resources. Clients included: Beaumont; College for Creative Studies; Delphi Automotive; GM; GMAC Financial Services; Holcim; Peninsula Capital Partners; and St. John Health System to name a few.
In the late ’90s, Brian was invited by Doug Kisor (Design Chair) to join the graphic design department at the College for Creative Studies (Detroit, MI) as adjunct faculty—a position which he is involved with through today. Armed with a passion for typography and a belief that design is an constantly evolving educational process, Brian’s focus has been teaching Typography I, II & III courses to first- and second-year students as well as periodically teaching Environmental Design, Visual Communications, and Professional Business Practices classes to third- and fourth-year students.
In 2003 Brian co-founded CastleNason Design as a creative partner of the award-winning design and marketing collaborative Group [eX] (Royal Oak, MI), and in 2010 transitioned the firm into B. A. Castle Design. Remaining an integral partner of Group [eX], the creative collaborative continues to evolve beyond traditional studios and agencies by combining its principals’ experience with an understanding of market trends and consumer preferences, and offering clients insightful brand positioning and integrated marketing efforts. In his roles as an owner, principal, creative director, educator and designer, Brian oversees a diverse range of projects collaborating with both clients and creative teams. A representative list of clients he has had the opportunity to work with include: Balthazar Korab; Carhartt; College for Creative Studies; Guardian Industries; Larson Realty Group; Lubrizol Performance Coatings; McNish Group; Peninsula Capital Partners; PPG; St. Joe Mercy Health System, etc.
Today, with his experience and passion for design, Brian continues to look forward to the next challenge in providing value to clients and organizations through effective, creative communication design solutions.
